Autism news: Why is my child misbehaving? Part 2 August 22, 2025 |
Hello All,
We all know that just about every parent has to deal with behavior problems. And behavior issues are a particularly big challenge for autism parents. It’s normal to assume that when our kids act up, they either want to test our patience or they want something they don’t have. But what if I told you that some of these kids actually DON’T want to do the thing they’re tempted to do? Can you imagine how Johnny would feel if, after biting his mother, his parents didn’t understand that he wanted very much NOT to bite his mother? This is exactly what we’re dealing with when it comes to obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD. OCD is completely different from other behavioral problems in that there is no desire to act out. Rather, it’s a temptation, or compulsion, to do something they DON’T want to do. OCD doesn’t usually manifest itself until kids are in their teenage years. So, you may find these issues cropping up as they get older even if there were no problems when they were younger. The more we understand why our kids are acting out, the more we can help them. And please know that if your child is suffering from OCD, help is available, and I’ll tell you about that at the link below. I’ve written a new article on obsessive-compulsive disorder, and I plan to soon be posting an article on panic attacks. Before I hand this website off to Sitesell, I want to do what I can to help parents cope with these difficult conditions. You can learn more about obsessive-compulsive disorder
